Exercising Both Sides of your Brain

The brain

How do you re-energize a mind that is tired from the mundane tasks of selling

Sorry I’ve been away for so long.  Sometimes life intervenes, like in the form of a new job.  There is much to be thankful for.

In our daily lives as selling professionals, the mundane and routine tasks can leave your brain tired and lacking enthusiasm.  Sometimes you need to give yourself a lift.  After months of training exercises, phone conferences and a lot of reading, there are days when I need to walk away for just 15 minutes to reignite the neurons.

I’ve found a way to quickly exercise both sides of my brain in a very quick session: Music!  A few years ago, I started playing electric guitar.  I’ve been a musician virtually all my life.  I started playing the organ at the age of 5 and took lessons weekly until I was 14.  I had a band in high school and college.  I even got paid a few times for our band’s performances.  Back then, the joke was that we would play for free to get exposure.  Then one day, my friend’s father asked me if we had made any money.  I said that we had played some gigs and got good exposure, to which he replied, “Isn’t that something you die from?”

So back to how I get that quick, but energizing break.  I love learning new guitar leads from classic songs.  There are some that have been running in my mind for years that are my absolute favorites.  In my spare time, I work diligently to learn to play them either by ear, or from YouTube videos.  So when I need a break, I rip a few off.  Music has a wonderful way of calling on both sides of your brain: the creative right brain and the logical left brain.  Art is the same way, if you are not musically inclined.

Some might think that this blog post is just an excuse to embed some video to create some new visuals.  It is.  So enjoy and find that artistic quickie that re-energizes you when you need it most.
